This Scripture-based prayer developed by our Movement Youth leaders is full of truth to speak over your children as they head back to school. Feel free to copy and share it as you see fit.
Blessings and Power
Father God, we pray a special blessing over our youth, who are a gift from you. We thank you God for your promise: If we "train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it."
And so we say the children in our lives are Yours. They will know you and proclaim your name. They will stand tall on your Word and praise you. They will lay hands on the sick and heal. They will dwell in your presence where there’s fullness of joy.
Father, we praise you for your love and faithfulness. We thank you for your protection and care over our families. If you are for us, who can be against us? You are a Redeemer, a Restorer, a Friend. Resonate in the hearts of young people today, Lord. Assure them of the peace that comes in knowing you supply every need through Christ Jesus.
As students go back to school, we say Lord bless and keep them. Every child we know who sets foot into a classroom, we say Lord bless and keep them. As they grow up in this chaotic world, we say Lord bless and keep them. As they face peer pressure and the demands of life, we say Lord bless and keep them. Turn your face towards them and give them peace. May they keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice.
Peace and Purpose
God, we pray that our children will learn to live a life of love, through the Spirit who dwells in them. That they will love you with all their heart, mind, soul and strength, and then turn and love their neighbor as they love themselves.
Lord you created their inmost being; nothing in their lives can catch you by surprise. We thank you Lord for being that kind of God. A God who’s strong and mighty. All seeing. All knowing. The beginning. The end. The infinite one. The one loves us more deeply than we can fathom. The one who sees the beginning from the end. Let our students find comfort in you and you alone, Lord.
Guarded from Distractions
Guard their gates, in the name of Jesus. Guard their eyes from pornography, lust and lewdness. They won't take interest in the carnal desires promoted by society. Lord, guard their ears from doubt and demeaning words. We declare that every negative word spoken to or around them will fall to the ground and not take root. Father, guard their hearts from pride and wickedness. Guard their mouths from unwholesome talk. Give them speech that builds and heals rather than destroys. Increase their gift of faith, knowing that life and death are in the power of the tongue. Protect their hands and feet, keeping them steady for both work and war.
Let our youth say, “I will not look with approval on anything that is vile. I hate what faithless people do; I will have no part in it.” We know, “Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.” God, keep the fools away, as well as the foolish thoughts and the foolish behavior. Grant them wisdom and discernment beyond their years.
Minds Stayed on Christ
“How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your Word.” We pray that this generation will seek your face continually. They will draw near to you and cling to your Word at all times.
"Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." May we each refuse to lean on our own understanding. But in all our ways acknowledge you, knowing you will make our paths straight.
We declare that our youth will keep their minds stayed on You. Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, they will think about these things.
Boldness and Victory
Integrity and honesty will be their virtue and their protection. They will choose heaven and not hell. They will choose you and totally refuse the inferior gods and idols of this world.
We pray their faith in God will be strengthened and they overcome the spirit of fear to keep growing into strong warriors for Christ. Lord, would you continually lead our children into victory? Don’t let them be a slave to anything in this world. Cover them in your shadow and guard them from any traps the enemy lays.
In the name of Jesus, we rebuke strongholds and attacks, fleshly desires, cravings, bad habits, and anything that would keep them from living a life of freedom and peace. Father, help your children to understand they are not their own; their bodies are temples reserved for Your Holy Spirit and they should treat it as a sacred place. They will confidently make decisions to abstain and not conform; to honor your way of living, above all. Empower them to be self-controlled and alert, always watchful and careful of how they live.
Freedom in Christ Jesus
In the name of Jesus, we speak against the spirit of rebellion, disrespect and disobedience. They will know and show your love.
Father, you are raising up a generation. And we thank you for the work you’re doing on the inside of our youth. May they keep a desire and a hunger and thirst for you. We declare and decree that the enemy shall have no foothold in their lives. Instead, they will be truth bearers. The will know the truth and the truth will set them free.
Free from an impoverished mindset. Free from the bondage of sin. Free from bullying and slander. Free from anxiety and depression. Free from suicidal thoughts. Free from addiction. Free from hopelessness. Free from loneliness. Free from low self-esteem. Free from generational curses. We speak this in the name of Jesus.
Diligence and Commitment
Our young people shall live and not die. They shall conquer and not buckle. They shall lead with boldness. They will follow you with their whole heart. Lord, we pray that your light will shine through them, that others may see your good deeds and glorify you in Heaven. Because of them, families will be changed.
Help them to not give up in doing good. Keep them loyal, committed and focused on your will for each day of their life. Help them to remain content in the plans and places you have for them. May they learn to be diligent in their work. To work hard to keep their daily life respectful and respectable, always honoring you and those around them.
We also pray that their creativity will never run out. That no matter their age, you’ll give them Kingdom ideas backed by a Kingdom mindset. Help them trust You more and more each day.
Families at Peace
Thank you, God, that you hold all power in your hands. You are calling the next generation to greater. Help us, Lord, to lead them with grace and truth. Give us wisdom and discernment so we don’t hinder them from getting to You.
Resolve any strife in our homes, Lord. May we keep you at the center of our households. In the name of Jesus, neither strife nor division has a place in our homes. We reside in peace and harmony.
Give every parent rest and peace when it comes to their children. They will lay any anxious or concerning thoughts about their children at your feet, knowing you have them and their family in your hands. Keep a hedge of protection around their homes. When parenting is tough, may they come to you because you are our constant help.
Fill every family with your truth and cover us with your favor. No greater joy will a parent have than to hear that their children are walking in the truth.
And we declare it so, in Jesus' name.
