Spiritual Gifts Unpacked
In our current series, we've been challenged to identity our spiritual gifts within the Kingdom. As Pastor Lathan explained—once we properly identify our gifts, we are able to properly operate in our gifts. You can't use what you're unaware you have.
In addition, he has provided us with this brief synopsis of 27 gifts found in Scripture:
1) ADMINISTRATION | 1 Corinthians 12:28
Greek Translation: kubernesis; to steer, guide, helsman
Goal: To steer the body toward the accomplishment of God-given goals and directives through the planning, organizing, and supervising of others.
2) APOSTLE | Ephesians 4:11 & 1 Corinthians 12:28
Greek Translation: apostolos; one sent forth
apo' = from; 'stello’ = send
Goal: To be sent forth to new frontiers with the gospel, to provide leadership over church bodies, and to maintain authority over spiritual matters pertaining to the church.
3) CELIBACY | I Corinthians 7:7,8
Goal: To voluntarily remain single without regret, and with the ability to maintain controlled sexual impulses so as to serve the Lord without distractions.
4) DISCERNMENT | 1 Corinthians 12:10
Goal: To clearly distinguish truth from error by judging whether the behavior or teaching is from God, Satan, human error, or human power.
5) EVANGELISM | Ephesians 4:11
Greek Translation: euaggelistes; preacher of gospel
Eu = well; Angelos = message - messenger of good
Goal: To be a messenger of the good news of the Gospel.
6) EXHORTATION | Romans 12:8
Greek Translation: paraklesis; calling to one's side
Goal: To come along side of someone with words of encouragement, comfort, consolation, and counsel to help them be all God wants them to be.
7) FAITH | I Corinthians 12: 8 - 10
Goal: To be firmly persuaded of God's power and promises in order to accomplish His will and purpose by displaying such confidence in Him and His Word; thus, circumstances and obstacles do not shake that conviction.
8) GIVING | Romans 12:8
Goal: To share what material resources you have with liberality and cheerfulness without thought of return.
9) HEALING | I Corinthians 12: 9, 28, 30
Goal: To be used as a means through which God makes people whole physically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually.
10) HELPS | I Corinthians 12:28
Goal: To render support or assistance to others in the body so as to free them up for ministry.
11) HOSPITALITY| I Peter 4: 9, 10
Greek Translation: philoxenos; love of strangers
Goal: To warmly welcome people, even strangers, into one's home or church as a means of serving those in need of food or lodging.
12) INTERCESSION | I Thessalonians 5:16-18
Goal: The special ability God gives to some to pray for extended periods of time on a regular basis, and to see frequent and specific answers to their prayers to a degree much greater than that which is expected of the average Christian.
13) WORD OF KNOWLEDGE | I Corinthians 12:8
Goal: To seek to learn as much about the Bible as possible through the gathering of information and the analyzing of that data.
14) LEADERSHIP | Romans 12:8
Goal: To stand before the people in such a way as to attend to the direction of the body with such care and diligence so as to motivate others to get involved in the accomplishment of these goals.
15) MARTYRDOM | I Corinthians 13:3
Goal: To give over one's life to suffer or to be put to death for the cause of Christ.
16) MERCY | Romans 12:8
Goal: To be sensitive toward those who are suffering, whether physically, mentally, or emotionally, so as to feel genuine sympathy with their misery, speaking words of compassion, but moreso caring for them with deeds of love to help alleviate their distress.
17) MIRACLES | I Corinthians 12:10, 28
Goal: To be enabled by God to perform mighty deeds – deeds that witnesses acknowledge as being of supernatural origin and means.
18) MISSIONARY | Ephesians 3:6 – 8
Goal: To be able to minister in another culture.
Goal: The gift that gives a believer the capability to present personal witness and inspiration to others through instrumental music, singing, or dancing. The gift whereby the Spirit enables certain Christians to praise God through music in such a way as to enhance the worship experience of other believers. The spiritual aspect of the gift is revealed as the gift bearer gives witness to love and praise for the Lord; thus, glorifying God.
20) PASTOR | Ephesians 4:11
Goal: To be responsible for spiritually caring for, protecting, guiding, and feeding a group of believers entrusted to one's care.
21) PROPHECY | Romans 12: 6; 1 Corinthians 12:10; Ephesians 4:11
Greek Translation: prophetes - the forth telling of the will of God
Goal: To speak forth the message of God to His people.
22) SERVICE | Romans 12:7
Greek Translation: Diakonia – deacon or attendant; 'Diako' = to run errands
Goal: To identify undone tasks in God's work, however menial, and to use available resources to get the job done.
23) TEACHING | Romans 12:7; I Corinthians 12:28; Ephesians 4:11
Goal: To instruct others in the Bible in a logical, systematic way so as to communicate pertinent information for true understanding and growth.
24) TONGUES | 1 Corinthians 12:10; 14:27 - 28
Goal: To speak in a language not previously learned so unbelievers can hear God's message in their own language or for the body be edified.
25) INTERPRETATION OF TONGUES | I Corinthians 12:10;14: 27, 28
Goal: To translate the message of someone who has spoken in tongues.
26) VOLUNTARY POVERTY | I Corinthians 13:3
Goal: To purposely live an impoverished lifestyle to serve and to aid others with your material resources.
27) WISDOM | I Corinthians 12:8
Goal: To apply knowledge to life in such a way as to make spiritual truths quite relevant and practical in proper decision-making and in daily life situations.
